A stack of old books to illustrate a blog posting about copyright. These are the spines of "Gedachten van Blaise Pascal" (Dutch), Jacob van Lennep's De pleegzoon (Dutch), George Gibbs' The Vagrant Duke and Pears' Cyclopædia.

This is another of WeatherGrrrl's art books that she's submitting to the annual juried student art exhibit here at UMM. (See A generous gift for another.)

I've already posted two of the photos in this collage: Trapped in the folds and Pattern and fold; line and curve. The center shot was taken at the same time as those, but the other three (two on the left and the middle right) were taken last week.

Unlike the previous book, this one was not a gift to me (or anyone else). WeatherGrrrl did, however, make a very similar book for my mother. This was really cool because my mom is a major source of orts for WeatherGrrrl, and also a conduit to a gazillion serious needle artists that save their orts and pass them to use through my mother.

Mini Books and Magazines

My colleague Reenie is a talented artist and miniature hobbyist. She made these amazing mini magazine bundles and mini “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books. I’ve placed a penny in the photo so you can see the small scale of the work.

She taught our Library Fun Club how to make books like these, and the kids had so much fun. I’m hoping she’ll display them in the library real soon to show the rest of the school these cute new library collection additions.

Pelican Life Magazine Spring 2009

After putting out the first Pelican Life magazine .. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/2992835409/ last year, I had a lot of requests, but decided to put out another issue anyway. This is clearly an under served niche market with a lot of pent up demand. To really appreciate the finely nuanced articles you need to view it large.

Even harder an execice as for music and movies, these are the 24 books I would take on a desert island. Lots are missing (see at the end) but these have had deep impacts on me and have been my favs over the years. No particular order. For all the listed books, I enjoy most works of the corresponding writers but I had to choose one.

Franz Kafka - Le Procés / The Trial
Georges Perec - La vie mode d'emploi
JMG Le Clezio - Le Procés-Verbal
EM Cioran - De l'inconvénient d'être né
Charles Baudelaire - Les Fleurs du Mal
René Daumal - Le Mont Analogue

Michel Leiris - Aurora
Herman Hesse - Le Jeu des Perles de Verre
Boris Vian - L'Automne à Pékin
F. Nietzsche - Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra
JK Huysmans - A Rebours
Joseph Heller - Catch 22

Norman Spinrad - Bug Jack Barron
Lautréamont - Les Chants de Maldoror
R. Zelazny - The Chronicles of Amber
Philip K Dick - UBIK
Louis Pauwels et Jaques Bergier - Le Matin des Magiciens
Charles Bukowski - Play the piano like a percussion instrument until the fingers begin to bleed

Philip Roth - The Human Stain
Daniel Pennac - Aux fruits de la passion
John Brunner - Stand on Zanzibar
Charles Mingus - Beneath the underdog
Louis Ferdinand Celine - Voyage au bout de la nuit
John Irving - A prayer for Owen Meany

Great books and writers are missing that were of my first selection: Dostoievsky, Villiers de l'Isle Adam, Raymond Queneau, Alfred Jarry, Alexandre Vialatte, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Raymond Roussel, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, André Breton, Thomas Hardy, Garbriel Garcia Marquez, John Fowles, Umberto Eco, Andres Ibanes, Douglas "Godel, Escher, Bach" Hofstadter, Lawrence Durrell, Michel Onfray, William Gibson, Jorge Luis Borges, John Dos Passos, Thomas Mann, Jack Kerouack, Malcolm Lowry, Henry Miller..... and many more.

All these (but one) are covers of books I own.

A stack of books on a plank. You see the spines of "Historische Studiën," "Gedichten van Jacques Perk," "Klaasje Zevenster," and "Dichtwerken" by Bilderdijk. The bottom two books I had to re-"bind" using duct tape, and are dictionaries.

Used for an article on a vanity press store in Amsterdam:
