20100310 - cats vs. snake #4 - GEDC1625 - Lemonjello, triumphant
cat image
Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
Lemonjello poses with his fresh kill, proud that he accomplished something other than getting fatter.

Also another good example of the shitty red lines our camera likes to put on everything.

Lemonjello the cat, black racer snake.

upstairs, Clint and Carolyn's house, Alexandria, Virginia.

March 10, 2010.

... Read my blog at ClintJCL.wordpress.com
... Read Carolyn's blog at CarolynCASL.wordpress.com

BACKSTORY: Cats caught another snake! This is the 4th time we've found a snake in our house. Ahh, the joys of living next to a creek in a 60 year old house.

I thought it was a toy. Then it moved. But that was the last time. It's jaw was damaged by Lemonjello, apparently. About 14in long, 0.8cm thick.

Tried to identify with: fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/identification-keys/id-keys-snakes/vir...

Round eyes, no heat sensing pit.

I thought it might be an Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos), but then I decided its nose wasn't upturned enough, not like in the pictures I saw.

Its scales were not keeled, so I had to check for a Preocular scale. None were present.

The next step is to count the mid-body scale rows. Are they = 19? They were definitely over 19 -- possibly closer to 20-23.

That led me to the next page, which asks if the dorsum [top] is uniformly black and blue, or has blotches or crossbands. This one was the latter.

Now I had to check if the anal plate was a single or a double. This is easy, because single anal plates have divided subcaudal (below the butthole) scales, while double anal plates have undivided subcaudal scales. So it's really hard to do this step incorrectly. This guy had a single anal plate & divided subcaudal scales.

The next step, fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/identification-keys/id-keys-snakes/sna..., has us lookin at the dorsum again.

Unfortunately, this page gave 2 choices.. Neither of which applies to my snake!

So I had to go back a couple steps, to the one asking if the dorsum is uniformly black and blue - fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/identification-keys/id-keys-snakes/sna... ... This page shows a picture of a juvenile black racer, which actually is NOT uniformly black and blue. It's markings seemed very much like our snake, which was also a juvenile. Apparently they don't lose their patterns until they get about 12 inches long -- and this one was barely longer (14 inches, but still a baby).

Found other juvenile black racer pictures on Google Images, such as this one: www.snake-removal.com/pix/snake025.jpg

Looked for wikipedia page, found en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coluber_constrictor , which is for eastern racers in general. There's no wikipedia page for the Black Racer subspecies, unfortunately.

This page told me more about black racers: www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/colcon.htm ... They like edge habitats, and my house's backyard is the epitome of edge habitats.

So... I must conclude, tentatively, that this was a juvenile black racer.

Cat scans - 3D compilation
cat image
Image by Striving to a goal
NOTE: I DID NOT TAKE THESE PICTURES. That being said, I must state that they could not have been taken without me, because they are pictures *of* me. Each of the images actually started as a series of cat scans that were given to me on a disc after they were taken (I had to have my sinuses examined). I used a specialized program on the disc to compile each series into a 3-dimensional "model". Using the program, I can rotate each image and zoom in and out... I think it's the coolest thing to be able to see images of the inside of my head, even though it's mostly empty! <:-o

Cyber Cat
cat image
Image by Lady Pain (Marta Manso)

--

I always liked science fiction films. It's true that I like Matrix, Equilibrium and other films that in my opinion, know using special effects without losing history, but the certain thing is that the old sci-fi films, are thousand of times eerier, they pay more attention to cyberpunk. Instead of a lot of progress, a lot of future and a lot of blasters, they show the future like a declining and chaotic time, a time in which the power prevails over everything and everybody, the corruption is the most habitual and most of the society lives subjugated and watched, with its corresponding small rebellious group.

The black cinema airs ends the work. It's not wrong to think that it could happen, because the fashion, like History, is cyclical.

And all of this is fantastic to imagine it with adults carrying out those lives but… and the children? And infantile innocence? Surely that the Nature is wise, and it will manage to get ahead them… I want to think that the only difference, will be that their cuddly toys will be of fluorescent colors and will be decorated with neon…

Cat in a tree

In a weeping willow.
I selected the "shadow" mode for the white balance on my camera, thinking it'll be the good mode for such a setting.
But this mode gives a yellowish tint to the image, to compensate for the blue tint that things in the shadow have. The problem is that here, it was'nt really in the shadow, the light was filtered thru the green-yellow leaves, giving a greenish-yellowish light.
So of course, that + the wrong mode = yellow-green cat :D
But well, that was easy to correct on the comp', so now he's rather white.

Dot the Cat (After Caravaggio)
cat image
And so Dot returns to flickr after a long absence. She's been enjoying life in Portland, especially sleeping on the pillow next to Frank every night.

Now that I've taken a class on the art of the Spanish Baroque, I know this is how Dot would have looked had she been painted by the great master Michelangelo Caravggio. The deep chiaroscuro, the strong lights and darks, the splash of red - it's all there. Which is good, since it means I was off the hook as far as making adjustments to the photo.

It's been interesting learning about different ways of presenting images through painting, and applying those concepts to photography.

It was a gorgeous morning to have a day off. Managed to sleep in a little bit and have a leisurely morning on the patio with the cats. Spooky and I were looking at Lucy, who was in the window, debating on whether or not to come out. And yeah, I was feeling as rough as I look. Waiting for results of overnight finger oximeter test and hoping for a sleep apnea diagnosis. I'd like a reason to feel this damn crummy all the time thank you very much.

Dogs and Cats Are Skinned Alive in China for Fur

Thousands of protesters and supporters gathered along the Embarcadero in San Francisco today to watch the official run of the Olympic Torch as it visited San Francisco and the United States.

Unfortunately most spectators and protesters were disappointed when after gathering for hours city officials changed the torch route at the last minute.

Rather than run the torch along the previously arranged route along the Embarcadero, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, the torch instead travelled from McCovey Cove to Van Ness Avenue where runners then ran the torch down Bay Street and Marina Blvd.

The change in route for the torch run did not change the protest mood down along the Embarcadero however. Supporters of the Olympics exchanged chants and shouts with protesters who mostly seemed to be protesting China's continued occupation of Tibet. Flags were waved and protest signs were carried in an overall peaceful demonstration.

To see my complete set of images from today's protest you can click through here.

Found this large track along the side of the unpaved portion of the 19400 block of Miramar Parkway, Miramar, Broward County Florida on February 1, 2011. I measured the width by comparing the tracks to marks on my lens hood. They were about 7.5 cm (3 inches) wide and about the same length-- the photo angle foreshortens them a bit. The tracks crossed over the road, but because of all the coarse gravel they were indistinct. The animal appeared to spend some time loafing in an area aboout 5x10 feet on the south side of the road, as there were multiple tracks and overprints. I did not have a wide-angle lens with me, so I took these with the macro setting on my 720 mm telephoto system, from a distance of about 5 feet. Tracks are quite round and do not show nail prints. Toe imprints are rounded and there are 3 large and one smaller toe (to the right) in this impresssion, which does not appear to be a double register. Much too large for the Bocats that I have seen and photographed here. I hesitate to call them panther tracks, but they do suggest that this may be the case. No Florida Panthers have been reported in this area, to my knowledge, though there is an immediately adjacent Water Conservation Area that consists of recovering Everglades habitat. It is separated only by US 27 from the Everglades Preserve that does provide a continuous corridor to areas known to be inhabited by panthers. I talked to Florida FWC and they recommended that any panther sightings in this neighborhood should be reported to (561) 625-5122.

The FWC agent looked at the above photo and advised:

I looked at your image and at the angle presented it is hard to tell what type animal the track came from. Do you have any images that are taken from above so that we could look at the toe alignment? If there is a water source nearby, have you considered visiting the area to see if tracks are present there?

Right now, the identification of the track is hard to do. We would be happy to look at other images.

Thank you for contacting FWC with your information.

My reply:

I did walk along the edge of the lake, but there are no mud flats. Since it has not rained lately, all the puddles were dry and hard-baked. The tracks, which were in fine dusty sand on the shoulder of the gravel road, were almost obliterated by the high winds that arose this afternoon. Please take a look at the photo I took at 2:15 PM-- although now much more shallow and its features are not brought out by shadows because of the high sun, I can determine that they were actually about 8 cm (over 3 inches) wide. See my photos on FLICKR (link)

Photograph showing the aftermath of the Great Timber Yard Fire in Hartlepool, 1922. Although no human lives were lost during the blaze, it is thought that many animals may have perished during the inferno as they were forgotton or lost by owners rushing to save themselves and their furniture or, spooked by the changes in their surroundings, they ran right into the fire's path. Luckily, this cat appears to have survived unscathed and to have been returned to its owner, who is sitting holding it in the rubble of a fire-damaged building.

The cougar (Puma concolor), also puma, mountain lion, or panther, is a mammal of the Felidae family, native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major New World habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the New World, after the jaguar, and the fourth heaviest in the world, after the tiger, lion, and jaguar, although it is most closely related to smaller felines.

A capable stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources include ungulates such as deer and bighorn sheep, as well as domestic cattle, horses, and sheep, particularly in the northern part of its range, but it hunts species as small as insects and rodents. It prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but it can live in open areas. Cougars are known to kill at least one deer sized animal per week, more in warmer climates; unlike bears, they do not like spoiled meat.

The cougar is territorial and persists at low population densities. Individual territory sizes depend on terrain, vegetation, and abundance of prey. While it is a large predator, it is not always the dominant species in its range, as when it competes for prey with animals such as the gray wolf. It is a reclusive cat and usually avoids people. Attacks on humans remain rare, despite a recent increase in frequency.
