Happy Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in their temporary home near Ypres

Members of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders posing for the camera, near Ypres, Belgium. Most of the men seen here are looking out from underneath a tent-like structure. Their heads are just visible above a pile of sandbags. All of the men are looking towards the camera and smiling. Two further men are visible, one reclining on the ground and the other standing in a crouched position in the background. It is a posed but informal shot believed to have been taken by the British official photographer, John Warwick Brooke.
Images such as this were often used by the Government and Military as positive propaganda. By masking the grim reality of life at the Front, the authorities provided people with the reassurance they so desperately wanted.

Konica lenses of this era have an excellent reputation; the one on particular camera has not been tested, as it still needs a shutter and aperture rebuild.
The small triangular chromed tab below the lens controls the aperture. Below the f-numbers is an EV scale engraved into the shutter-speed ring. If desired, the aperture tab can be pinched against the serrations of the shutter dial, rotating the two together to offer EV coupling. However it's quite easy to move the aperture tab independently.
This is an eminently sensible system; and much better than the awkward one used on the later IIIA. But admittedly, locating the aperture scale out of sight below the lens was not the best ergonomic move.
