Jester (24:04:12)
photo gifts
My mother bought me a red pencil a few years ago, with this little fella sat on top. I've never used this pencil because I prefer the sentimental value over it's real world purpose. I don't want to waste a pencil- I can do that to any pencil. I'm like that. I collect a lot of stuff that way. I find it hard to say goodbye or let go to people and objects alike. It's like the story of the kid who loved his new shoes so much that he never wore them for fear of getting them dirty-and then grew out of them (what film is that from- I reckon Home Alone).

But hey, I finally found a use for the pencil-jester. The subject on the receiving end of a beautiful 55mm macro lens.

"Ragged Old Flag" by Johnny Cash

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there.
I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town".
I said, "Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that's a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it".
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down,
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town"
I said, "I think it is"
He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing "Say Can You See"
It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

"On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.
She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they've about quit wavin' back here at home
in her own good land here She's been abused,
She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,
But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in.
Cause she's been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don't let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I'm mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag"

Chinese New Year Celebration

It is Chinese New Year week. In Yokohama there is one of the largest China Town in Asia and they celebrate this time. I'll upload more photos of the celebration later(^_^;).

A lion coming in a restaurant and looking for a new year gift for him(her?).
Many of the shops & restaurants in China town prepare these gifts for lion(s) because the lions are a symbol of prosperity & strength. If they accept gifts, it'll give the shop/restaurant a good fortune of the year.

A lion has found a gift and is trying to eat it.
Usually this type of lion dance is performed with 2 people. In this picture the person doing the fore legs(^_^;) got up on the shoulder of the person doing the back and stood up. This requires a kind of gymnastics skill.

Market Place, Swan Street, Warwick

Just past the Warwickshire Museum. Still in Market Place. Swan Street up ahead.

Caffe Nero at the end of the square.

On the left is Piccadilly Cards & Gifts at 23 and 25 Market Place. Which is Grade II* listed.

In 1781 in might have been part of the Market Place (the actual Market Hall is nearby in Market Place).

Circa 1634, 3 storeys, altered and restored at various times. Timber framing is exposed on two upper floors and although considerable replacements have been made much of the original work remains particularly to west elevation facing New Street. Second storey is jettied and projecting joists have moulded ends. Four alternating large and small gable heads with chevron and geometrical framing. First storey has alternating bays of chevron and close square framing. First floor is jettied as second floor. Fairly satisfactory plate glass shopfronts and one C19 pair of Gothic windows and door. Remainder of ground floor is stucco. West elevation (to New Street) is similar, but with one large and two small gable heads; a greater proportion of this timber framing is original. On corner of New Street are three crude carved heads of considerable interest. C18 sashes in cased frames throughout on upper floors. Restored roof of old tiles and machine tiles. Interior: plaster overmantel with royal arms of Charles I and date ? 1634.

23 and 25 Market Place, Warwick -British Listed Buildings

To the left of the above is The Tuckery and Fenetres Etcetera.

On Swan Street is a Greggs.

On the right is the Period House Shop.

Western Super-Friends as Pure Mind
photo gifts
Please see also Japanese Super-Friends as Pure Body.

Transformers started in Japan but has become popular in the US, which also has its own Gundam in Iron Man. There is an Iron Giant based on Ted Hughes story, and Lilo's friend Stitch.

In my opinion, however, the Western imaginary friends that mirror the myriad robots and pokemon in Japan, are the plague of ghosts that have been helping us out recently. The first one I saw was in 1969 on the BBC in the tv series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased).

The basic pattern of Western 'human plus super-friend' dramas is that a detective is helped by a ghost or ghosts. The ghosts have no body only a message, a will, and the human's job is to let their will be done, so that they can disappear. The genre includes "The Sixth Sense," "The Dead Zone," "Tru Calling," "Ghost Wisperer," "The Medium," "Raines," and "The Listener." "A Gifted Man" though a doctor is along the same lines. "Dead Like Me" is from the point of view of the ghosts.

Their protagnoists have a lot in common with the geniuses that read minds in "Lie to Me," "The Mentalist," "Criminal Minds," and the various "CSI."

All of them, by their extrasensory, or extra sensitive powers of perception are able to read the message, the words, the will, of the super-being that has not been said and act upon it.

The human heros are, contra the Japanese humans, the puppets of their super-natural friends. And yet it is they that are the titular characters. In almost all cases (Dr. Malcolm Crowe from Sixth Sense and Hopkirk as possible exceptions) it is the 'reader' that is the central character, or self with whom the audience identifies. Westerners, perhaps due to the Judeao Christian influence, like to see ourselves as 'readers' who carry out the will of supernatural friends.

In Japan, though the robots are controlled, they are heros, the eponymous/titual characters, the focus of attention. No one buys Amuro Rei dolls, or Nobita Posters. The Japanese robot superheroes are body and self at the same time. Will, such as that of Nobita and Light is fallible, external, and leads people astray.

It is interesting, but probably conicidental that in Japan technology and robots are associated with the West, and that human-ghost interaction is the most famous theme in the traditional drama of Japan. It is as these culturals have found imaginary friends in each other. Again coincidentally, or due to the spread of TV, the super robot genre started, as far as I know, in the late 60's early seventies about the same time as Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased).

Best! Thank-You Gift! EVER!
photo gifts
Gave a talk to Washington Apple Pi this morning and received the greatest thank-you gift ever: a Holga 120 rollfilm camera.

It is made of plastic and has many imperfections and no technical superlatives of any kind. But it's become a cult camera because -- like so many of us -- it has a winning personality and thus people tend to reclassify its faults as mere Quirks.

Quirks of the Chinese-made Holga include: a cheap, distortive lens that vignettes the corners of the frame and a poorly-designed back that leaks light. This kit actually includes a roll of electrical tape. The instructions urge you to tape down the two AA batteries that power the flash and to strap the camera with it to tighten the back a little better.

The group presented it to me after my talk and I couldn't have been more delighted. I took a seat while the rest of the meeting continued. Thennnn...

...I noticed that film was included in the box.

I am a weak man. So yes, I unwrapped the cellophane and tried to assemble the camera and load it up as quietly as I could. There was no way I was leaving there without Holga shots of the group.

Here, let me show them to you:

Oh.

It's on film.

I have to send it out and wait for the prints to come back.

Well, we can look forward to that, then.

Apple Pi went to the top of the range and bought me the Holga 120CFN, with built-in flash AND integrated color flash filters. Twist the knob up at the top and and Red, Blue, and Yellow filters rotate into position to color the flash light.

(I have just had a discussion with the friend I'm staying with -- a scientist -- about whether this thingy is Filtering the light or Tinting it.)

(I have some really awesome friends.)

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this (for the next 12 exposures, at least). The whole point of the Holga is to return to the days of fun, snapshot photography. If there's no chance of producing a clear image free from defects, you can dispense with the Lust For Perfection and just take some damned pictures.

Check out the manual right here.

Damn, I've spent almost an hour engrossed in the Holga FAQ, and a set of instructions for how to use the Holga lens on a DSLR, and a Holga group on Flickr, and...

...Okay I'm clearly going to be up for a while. You kids go play.
