Early Morning On the Boardwalk

Although the light was wonderful on this morning, I've never been able to make morning light look quite right. With the help of 9X HDR, my intent is that it look pretty close to the way I saw it when I captured the image. To be honest, I'm not sure if it works or not...

Thiruvannamalai Maha Karthigai Deepam

This is a f11 aperture/56 sec exposure/1000 ISO shot. This was shot on the deepam festival day at Thiruvannamalai. I shot this at 7.18 pm when it was dark and when the thiruvannamalai hill was lit by moon light. No processing except increasing the saturation a little.

About the Festival:

Thiruvannamalai Karthigai Maha Deepam is a festival observed in the Tamil month of Karthikai at famous Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara swamy temple in the temple town Thiruvannamalai located in Tamil Nadu, India. It is celebrated on Kartikai Pournami, the Full Moon day in the month of Kaarthikai.

It is also considered as the extension of the Deepavali festival. In some houses, they double the number of lamps every day from the day of Deepavali and this way, they end up with a number of lamps on the day of Kaarthigai Deepam.

On the final day of the Karthigai festival, the Bharani Deepam will be lit in the Sanctum Sanctorum early in the Morning. The Maha Deepam will be lit on the hill top on the evening (at 6 pm). The Maha Deepam can be seen even from a distance of 35 km. The lighting of the Maha Deepam will take place simultaneously with Deeparadhanam to the five deities in the temple at the foot of the hill.

colored glass attached to a white board with a single light shining onto them. The reflection and the light shining through the glass creates incredible images on the wall. This was on display on a 224' yacht anchored here is Sarasota, Florida as a floating art gallery.

.The reason the right hand side says, "Digital" is that my images are 11" x 14" or larger most of the time and will not fit into the scanner. I use my Nikon D-50 to shoot the black and white, BW Toned or BW handcolored prints to enter them on Flickr

Fearless: 4 of 31

The Fearless shoot was my chance to really plan a shoot unique to my creative relationship with Alexandra Rodionova. The goal was to compare fashion of today with fashion and photography of around the time I was born, (1967). I used two full issues of Andy Warhol's original Interview Magazine for the background. It was a tough choice cutting up those magazines. These are really rare and really expensive. But if I wasn't going to put everything I had into this it just wouldn't be worth doing. This was one of those shoots were everything came together. The hair, (Mark), the makeup, (Caroline), the outfit, the background, the lighting, everything.

Correct Outdoor Lighting

Kudos to the lighting designer for this building.

The lighting on the Davis County (Utah) Library is a model of correct outfoor lighting techniques. Nothing glares in your eyes, no light trespasses on to adjascent properites. It's lit to appropriate levels. I tried to make sure that the image I saw on the camera LCD matched what I saw with my eyes. The only difference was that I could actually see the stars.

It's not the number of photons, but where they are directed that makes effective lighting.

[edit] This photo can look wildly different depending to your monitor's settings. You might have to take my word for it that the lighting is really good.

Christmas on the Champs-Élysées

This is one of the most famous streets in the world, so I wanted to do my best to capture it in as romantic a way as possible. The time of day usually does a lot to affect the mood, and these classical places (especially in Paris) are often better to shoot in the evening or night. The dusk light is different than the morning light. And, frankly, it’s easier to stay up past sunset than it is to wake up before the sun rises.

I love how these cities put up lights on the trees. I wish all cities would do this at night. Some people complain about “light pollution”, but photographers won’t!

Trey's Tip: While I don’t mind making a busy street look hectic with the hustle and bustle of little ants marching, in this case, I wanted it to look fairly empty. The two ways to do this are to shoot at a high f-stop or to shoot when it is raining and people don’t walk on the streets. This is the latter case. Normally, in an HDR, the rain does not show up – just the nice reflective wetness that stays behind.

Winter Light
photo lighting
I took this photograph on a walk around Cheney Lake in our neighborhood. After our recent couple of snow days, the snow looks nice and fresh again. We will probably set another weather record this Winter for smallest amount of snow fall. Last Winter, we set a record for the most amount of snow fall (143 inches). Strange weather times!

OK, "inside" this post of the snow scene, I wanted to include a photograph of Harry's replacement (if that's even possible!), a Grey Newfoundland Puppy who is 4 weeks old now. This is one of the first photographs from the Breeder in N. Carolina of Sailor with his eyes open. In four more weeks, Sailor will be flying to Anchorage to join our pack. Really looking forward to his arrival.

I always love temple abstracts. While i was returning to the hotel room with my friends after a day's shoot, we spotted this man setting up the evening lights on the temple tower. He was totally unseen among the statues of the gods.
