This is the view I get every morning while I’m here in Phuket, Thailand. The scenery here is spectacular. The sun rise however is either hit or miss… missing more than it hits. But when it does hit, it’s one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunrise.

Review of David duChemin's book, Within the Frame
"Within the Frame" is a great book and I recently gave it a 5-star review on Amazon. Here is what I said about David's work:
David presents all of his thoughts in a wonderful and inspiring way.

I find, personally, that the typical photography book is predictable and obvious. I like thinkers that challenge the status-quo, and David certainly falls in that realm. This book will inspire you because he'll give you new ways to think about stuff you've been thinking about for years. If you are the kind of person that just wants old tired dictums being reinforced, then this isn't the book for you. It's full of new, fresh thought, smart conclusions, and, of course, beautiful photographs.

The world of Photography is changing, and David is one of the great flag bearers of the new age.

Daily Photo - The Long Road to the Andes
There was a series of plane hops and car rides to get down towards the very edge of Argentina. At one point, I felt like I was on this road for a good 5 hours in a very sketchy rental van.

We pulled over to the road to relieve ourselves. I was ill-prepared for how windy this place is. There's just no good way to capture how windy it was, since everything over one foot off the ground had blown away an epoch ago. The only evidence I have is that this was made with a single RAW file since I could not keep the tripod still for multiple exposures! I could not even keep myself upright! Let's not talk about how I had to relieve myself; I can simply say there is only one good direction to aim.

Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho constitutes some of the most splendid and architecturally marvelous specimen of temple architecture in India. The group includes such magnificent temples like Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Chaunsat Yogini Temple, Chitragupta Temple, Lakshamana Temple, Matangeswara Temple, and Varaha Temple.

I don't often post the same image with different processing. But in the case of this image there is a bit of a back-story and a Flickr experiment at work.

As many of you know Rj Dollen is a collection of creative types headed up by me, Cam. We collaborate, debate and often disagree on what processing works best, what lighting suits a model or achieves our end result best… and in a larger sense what is "beautiful." Now, all of that probably sounds like a lot of words clumped together just to say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." But is it really?

This day in Disney history:

(1971) One of Walt Disney World's most popular attractions, the Electrical Water Pageant, debuted on the Seven Seas Lagoon. Originally known as the Electrical Pageant, it is a thousand-foot-long floating parade, two “trains” of seven barges each bearing 25-foot-tall screens covered in blinking lights. To the sounds of Disney movie music and classical themes, these silhouettes of sea creatures circle the water every night between 9 and 10. The parade is visible from the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, and Contemporary hotels; guests often time their dinner reservations to coincide with the free show. The dry-land Main Street Electrical Parade debuted at Disneyland in 1972.

This day in Disney history:

(2003) Walt Disney World hosted a railway celebration in honor of Walt Disney's fascination with trains. The event also served as a reminder that the original Disneyland park was partly inspired by Walt's hobby. It was not simply that Walt was a train buff; trains became a major element in his conception of an amusement park. As early as 1948, he wrote a memo describing his idea for a park that featured a railroad station and was circumnavigated by the tracks. A railway is also a major feature of Disney World's Magic Kingdom, and miniature trains run through the Epcot World Showcase pavilion, Germany.

It's hard to get excited about posting a Disney picture in the wake of what happened early yesterday morning. My heart and thoughts go out to the 21 year old boy and his family. The monorail still is and always will be a beautiful thing to me - it's unfortunate when fantasy clashes with reality, especially when reality is ugly. Darn it, people aren't supposed to die at Disney. Hopefully they can understand by way of investigation exactly what happened so something like this will never happen again.

Quick Fact:
One monorail crashed into another around 2 AM on July 5, 2009 resulting in the death of the monorail driver. This was the first such incident in the monorail system's near 38 years of service.

20 Nov 2009 Photo of Morro Bay Harbor more-or-less from the perspective of a 1942 photo (ref. set www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ ) showing original dredging operations before the Embarcadero was built up. Charlene Odekirk, Rosemary Olszewski asked me to take a photo of present-day 2009 Morro Bay dredging operations from the same perspective as the 1942 dredging photo she showed to me. It was suggested (by Rouvaishyana?) that the two images might be hung together in the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History for visitor interest. I have included a couple of candidate photos, as the current dredging setup barely shows in the image taken from the same point as the machinery is located further out at the Rock and is tiny in the image. www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/2303222094 is one location I recommend for the "2009" version. This one taken 3/1/09 does not have the dredging equipment visible of course but really shows the new harbor. I here posted other present-day image candidates at the set at www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ (I have also included some iPhone shots of the 1942 image just for perspective - they are NOT of reproduction quality). You can download the full-resolution versions of the photos in this set (you may need to login, and select "all sizes") and print it, or click "order prints" and it can be fulfilled online. I turned my printer off over two year ago and now outsource all my limited printing needs to mpix.com or the like. I wanted to suggest that to really demonstrate the changes over time, that the new image(s) not be a print, but simply a photo, or better, a video, displayed in one of those inexpensive LCD digital picture frames that PJ used to promote my Click-Click product in 2008. Anyway, I can't resist pushing people's technical buttons. I have repeatedly suggested that museum displays that are visual only and not consist of palpable or 3-dimensional objects, be rendered via HD programmable LCD displays (a suggestion for the museum improvements committee?). Imagine, exhibits that never fade and can be incrementally improved at no cost! You might also ask "Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CA. What did it Look Like between the Mainland and the Rock from the Late 1800's until Today?" Seen, we think, from the upper deck of a cruiser, this photo is reproduced with the purpose of furthering the discussion going on under Entry 6240 concerning the mystery submarine[s] or objects in that photo three entries back. One suggestion has been that the utterly unknown structure[s] are a WWI ruse intended to deceive - which would be, of course, and intention to deceive any unfriendly eye observing the ships and boats at Garden Island.

On that point, we observe the canvas structure aft of the conning tower here, and what looks like a wooden beam projecting from the centre of it. Could the purpose have been to create the impression that the RAN's two E class boats carried a deck gun [which they didn't] ?

Also, what is the framed structure seen on the water beside the submarine on the other side , and does that have a connection with the boat-like structure shown in the foreground of Pic 6240? Our imaginations are heightened.

Although I much prefer the overall look and feel of the "Peter Pan's Flight" exterior of Disneyland (if you haven't seen it search for pictures, it's pretty cool), I really like this detail and the rest of the Peter Pan characters they've put up on the building at the Magic Kingdom.

Quick Fact: The original intent of the Disneyland version of this attraction was for the guests to fly through the ride as if they were Peter Pan. Audiences did not quite grasp this concept and were left wondering, "Why wasn't Peter Pan in the Peter Pan ride?"
