Canaries who live aboard Ambulance Train to cheer wounded with song

Two nurses and their canaries posed by their train, France, during World War I. This photograph was taken at an angle down the side of the train. As a result the image is dominated by overpowering dark metal-sheeting. At two intervals along the composition nurses are leaning out of open windows. Their uniforms are clean and sharp, and they are intent on the cages they are holding. The cages are on display and hold canaries which apparently were used to alleviate the boredom of the patients.

This photograph would have sent an ideal propaganda message. The implication that proper, well-organised and efficient care was provided for those at the Front would have reassured those at home. The canaries meanwhile provide a light-hearted note to the seriousness of war injuries.

Day 55 of 365 (Year Three)

Week 110 Assignment 2 for Take A Class With Dave and Dave.

Inspired by a Cartoon/Comic - Create an image inspired by cartoon or comic. Open to interpretation. This was going to be limited to The Far Side until I found that Larson's cartoons are not widely available online.

Back in my first year of 365 Days I did this comic strip self-portrait to which my friend Ron responded with his own. I had planned on doing several more of these, but Ron sort of Flickr'd himself out and stopped doing 365 days, which meant that my source material became harder to come by.

Luckily, I convinced Ron to participate in this week's assignment, although he did wait until the last minute to get me his files. Apparently he felt that his wife's birthday and spending time with the family over the weekend was more important than the assignment. I know, he really needs to work on his priorities. He just doesn't get it.

This particular comic is based on a What The Duck strip that, when I read it, I knew I had to recreate it with Ron.

Cold feet, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph shows two young members of one of the Labour Corps, probably the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC). They are sitting in the snow by one of the Labour Camp huts. They have their boots off and according to the original caption are greasing their feet, presumably to give some relief against the cold.

This image perhaps gives a glimpse of how strange and alien Europe must have appeared to many of the Labour Corps men, and how far away home must have seemed. For the South Africans, for example, it was a six-week sea voyage from their home port to France.
